If you’re looking for ways to defuse employee disputes before they turn into a boxing match, follow the tips in this post.
1. Show You’re the Boss
On a construction site, you need to show your employees who is manning the ship. Strong leadership will ensure that employees follow your orders. It will also help to defuse employee arguments faster because they respect you as a leader.
2. Don’t Tolerate Bickering
Take a no-nonsense approach to bickering and arguing. Let your employees know that it won’t be tolerated. If they have issues, let them take it up with you. Let them know that arguing and bickering is only going to hurt overall results in the long run.
3. Listen to Your Employees
If your employees are arguing, hear them out on it. Talk to each employee separately and listen to what each person has to say. Come up with a plan that quickly resolves the situation. The sooner you come to the resolution the better it will be for the rest of the team.
4. Come Up with a Good Solution
A band aid solution will only cause the problem again. It’s your job to come up with a good solution that resolves the issue so it doesn’t happen again. Think about what your employees told you about the problem. Brainstorm ways so the solution doesn’t happen again.
5. Monitor the Situation
Once you’ve come up with a solution, monitor the situation to ensure there aren’t any more flare ups. By monitoring the situation, you will be able to see whether or not your resolution to the problem worked. If tensions still exist between employees, sit them down for another talk.
6. Get Rid of Repeat Offenders
Arguments are going to happen. However, if one person keeps causing issues, you’ll want to take a serious look at that person. Like a football team, it’s not worth having an instigator in the locker room, especially if the person is not performing up to par.
7. Create a Stress Free Environment
Okay, this is probably impossible on a construction site, but it’s the idea that counts. Try to identify potential areas that could cause significant stress to employees on site. Look for ways to eliminate or reduce the stress.
For instance, perhaps there is an issue with the delivery of building materials that is causing bottlenecks in productivity. Don’t sit on the situation. Look for ways to immediately solve it.
Following these seven tips will help you defuse arguments. Remember to take the time to listen to your employees. Try to take an objective viewpoint.
